A Week of Vegan’in.

No part of me really wants to be vegan. Sorry, but it’s true. At least at this point in my life.

I have my own beliefs about consuming animals. A vegan can protest that humans aren’t meant to eat meat, that it’s cruelty, yada yada. They can point to scientific articles agreeing with both of those things, and I could point too scientific articles disagreeing with those things.
Personally, I believe that humans are animals. We are not top of the food chain, we are part of it. Every animal has it’s predator and/or prey, and humans can be either of those. We can eat a shark, and we can also be eaten by one (plz don’t eat sharkies though).

I also lived in Italy for 4 months. Italy is the anti-fad-diet country. Seriously. Everyone there consumes copious amounts of oil, gluten, and meat (well, meat depends on the region—Tuscany eats very vegetarian—but cured meats is a big deal pretty much everywhere in Italy). And surprise, while eating oil, pasta, bread, meat, cappucini and ridiculous amounts of gelato, I lost weight. In fact, I was at my thinnest ever while living abroad, while consuming what some Americans would deem a “terrible” diet! Hmmm, something’s fishy here…

This is not saying that I disagree with vegans. I’m so for vegans! The more vegans/vegetarians, the better! I think what they do is great for themselves and for the environment. And I’m definitely not saying I’m some fat-steak-everyday kind of gal (can somebody say “constipated”?)—I actually eat highly plant-based. I rarely consume dairy and have organic, grass-fed, free-range meat maybe a couple times a week while I live at home, and maybe a couple times a month while I live on my own at school. I’m quite happy with my current diet and feel good about it. So why change it?

Well, number 1, I’m curious. I’ve dealt with low-iron and low blood pressure for years. I’m prone to dizzy spells, poor circulation, and fatigue. Because of this, I’ve always eaten meat to raise protein and iron levels (why I stopped eating vegetarian as a kid). So, I want to get out of my comfort zone and try something new. I’m not Catholic but I participate in Lent every year because I’m a doofas who really likes challenging myself. And heck, if I end up feeling really good, I might stick with it, at least for the majority of the time. Can I invent a new diet? How about: flexitarian?

Number 2, I’m so close already! As I said, meat isn’t a huge staple in my life, and neither is dairy. I consume homemade almond milk in coffee, cereal, and baked goods and I don’t eat eggs very often. I’d say my biggest downfall is cheese. Oh god, cheeeeeeeeese. Even that word is heaven. I love cheese, and not eating cheese would be harder than any other aspect for me.

My entire philosophy on eating is to eat what makes you feel and look good. If you’re like me and your body can really thrive on a carb/veggie/meat/cappuccino/gelato diet, then that’s awesome. Everyone’s body works different. We’re not all meant to have the same haircut, makeup, clothes, skincare, or diet.

At least in my opinion.

BUT I DIGRESS! (you’ll begin to notice this a lot)

So here’s the point:

I leave for Wanderlust Fest – Squaw Valley next Thursday. So from Sunday 7/13 to Sunday 7/20, I am going to try my hardest to be vegan. Initially I actually considered doing a 3-day juice cleanse before WL, but I thought that was a bit extreme, and I don’t really believe in juice cleansing for longer than a day. Your body cleanses itself when it’s fed right, so that’s what I’m going to do. I’m going to get close and cozy with mother nature and eat only things that grow out of this earth: fruit, veggies, nuts, and grains. And hey, I’ll be real here, I want to slim down a teensy bit before wearing skin-tight spandex for a full weekend. Ever since starting my desk job I’ve noticed a little more softness here and there that wasn’t there before! Where did my four pack go!? But I’m not going to let this drive the diet change. I’m not going to post measurements or weight loss because that’s not the reason I’m doing this.
I’m doing this to feel cleansed, pure, and healthy for one of the best weekends of my life. I love WL, and I don’t want to feel shitty the whole weekend because I feel uncomfortable in my clothing, stressing about my skin, or feeling heavy from eating too much. My skin has been acting up since starting my desk job and I know it’s from not eating great, sitting all day (which has led to digestive issues) and not getting enough sleep.

I want to challenge and rejuvenate myself before I reward myself. It’ll make next weekend even better!


So here we go! Who knows, maybe if I feel good enough I’ll stick with it even longer? We’ll see! 🙂
